  1. The following is a vivāha-yajña address given by His Holiness Jayapatākā Swami Mahārāja on July 10th, 2019 in Chennai, India.

    Acintya Caitanya dāsa:
    yajña-dāna-tapaḥ-karma
    na tyājyaṁ kāryam eva tat
    yajño dānaṁ tapaś caiva
    pāvanāni manīṣiṇām

Translation: Acts of sacrifice, charity and penance are not to be given up; theymust be performed. Indeed, sacrifice, charity and penance purify even the greatsouls.

Purport by His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Śrīla Prabhupāda: The yogīs should perform acts for the advancement of human society. There are many purificatory processes for advancing a human being to spiritual life. The marriage ceremony, for example, is considered to be one of these sacrifices. It is called vivāha-yajña. Should a sannyāsī, who is in the renounced order of life and who has given up his family relations, encourage the marriage ceremony? The Lord says here that anysacrifice which is meant for human welfare should never be given up. Vivāha-yajña, the marriage ceremony, is meant to regulate the human mind so that it may become peaceful for spiritual advancement. For most men, this vivāha-yajña should beencouraged even by persons in the renounced order of life.
Sannyāsīs should neverassociate with women, but that does not mean that one who is in the lower stages oflife, a young man, should not accept a wife in the marriage ceremony. All prescribedsacrifices are meant for achieving the Supreme Lord. Therefore, in the lower stages, they should not be given up. Similarly, charity is for the purification of the heart. If charityis given to suitable persons, as described previously, it leads one to advanced spiritual life.

Jayapatākā Swami: So first I would like to welcome and pay my obeisances to His..Their Holinesses Bhakti Bṛnga Govinda Mahārāja, Bhānu Swami. Also, my greetingsand respects to His Holiness Bhakti Vinoda Swami and to His Grace Revatī Ramaṇadāsa and welcome to all the devotees [Not Clear 03:40].So as we heard from Śrīla Prabhupāda that this vivāha-yajña is a sacrifice which ismeant for spiritual advancement. We can see here that one of the greatest acts ofcharity is the kanyā-dāna. We see the elaborate arrangements for kanyā-dāna, kanyā-dāna. And we see elaborate arrangement here, we see the elaborate arrangement forkanyā-dāna and for executing this vivāha-yajña. In the 7th canto of the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, Yudhiṣṭhira Mahārāja asked Nārada Muniabout the ideal family life or gṛhastha life and, and Nārada Muni explained how thegṛhastha couple should serve Vāsudeva and how they should... How the husband hasto earn, maintain the family, but he should do so following the instructions of the guru, ofthe śāstra of the senior Vaiṣṇavas. In this way both should encourage... Śrīla Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura has also said that in the śāstra, it's recommended to takethe gṛhastha-āśrama for the young men and women. That it's, it is auspicious that theytalk with each other, they touch each other, but they should increase their sādhana-bhakti and devotional service. So in this way we are very happy that so many, that, that our disciples... Actually thePuṇḍarīka Keśava dāsa, he is a third generation. Mahāmaṇi Kṛṣṇa dāsa, hisgrandfather was my disciple. And Śrī Vallabha dāsa is also my disciple. And PuṇḍarīkaKeśava dāsa is also. So this is 3 generations. And we are very happy also MayurīMādhavī is my disciple and her parents are also my disciples. So we are all in the familyof Prabhupāda. We are all in the family of Prabhupāda.
So this is very auspicious and we are very happy that so many devotees are cominghere to bless the happy couple and also to bless this occasion, to bless this occasion. And so I hope that they will be very responsible in their gṛhastha life and this way, peacefully be able to form a strong team to serve Kṛṣṇa together. Please give them allyour blessings. Hare Kṛṣṇa.
